The United States diplomatic mission in Pakistan has temporarily suspended operations at several of its offices amid escalating security concerns following nationwide protests, officials confirmed on March 2, 2026.

According to an official advisory, the US Consulate General in Peshawar has temporarily suspended operations effective March 2, with all routine and emergency services paused until further notice. Routine consular functions normally provided by the Peshawar mission are being redirected to the US Embassy in Islamabad, which remains open for essential services.

Meanwhile, with ongoing demonstrations around diplomatic missions in Pakistan’s major cities, the US Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate Generals in Karachi and Lahore have cancelled all scheduled visa and American Citizen Services appointments for March 2 and March 3. The mission cited continued traffic disruptions and protest activity in the vicinity of these facilities as the primary reason for the cancellations. Applicants affected by these changes have been asked to await rescheduling notifications once conditions permit.

The advisory also urged American citizens in Pakistan to stay informed of local developments, avoid large crowds, monitor local media and update their contact details with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Movement of US government personnel within the country has been restricted as a precautionary measure.

These diplomatic interruptions come amid widespread protests in major Pakistani cities triggered by recent geopolitical developments, which have at times turned violent and disrupted normal civic life, particularly around foreign diplomatic sites.
