Womens Singles Figure Skating — Winter Olympics 2026 (Milano-Cortina)
Milan, Italy — February 19, 2026:
The women’s singles figure skating competition at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics is heading toward a dramatic finish today as Olympic medals are set to be decided in the free skating segment following a tightly contested short program earlier this week.
After the short program on February 17, Japan’s teenage sensation Ami Nakai stunned the field to take first place with a score of 78.71, narrowly edging compatriot Kaori Sakamoto (77.23). American skater Alysa Liu sits in third with 76.59, keeping strong medal hopes alive for Team USA heading into the decisive free skate.
The Olympic women’s singles event is split into two segments — the short program and the free skating routine — with the latter carrying significantly higher scoring weight and often reshaping the standings. Final medal positions will be determined by the combined scores from both segments after Thursday evening’s performances in Milan.
Experts note that the narrow margin separating the top contenders leaves the podium “wide open,” as the free skate allows athletes to attempt more complex jump combinations and technical elements that can dramatically shift rankings. A clean routine from any of the leading skaters could secure Olympic gold, while even minor errors may result in significant drops in placement.
Other skaters still within striking distance include Japan’s Mone Chiba and Georgia’s Anastasiia Gubanova, both capable of mounting a late push depending on how the top group performs in the final round.
With several world-class athletes separated by less than two points, the women’s free skating final is expected to deliver one of the most closely fought finishes of the figure skating program at the 2026 Winter Games.
