Pakistan’s First Homegrown EV to Hit Roads This Summer for Under Rs1 Million, Says EDB Chief

KARACHI: Pakistan is set to witness a major milestone in its automotive sector as the country’s first fully homegrown electric vehicle (EV) is expected to hit the roads by the summer of 2026 at a price below Rs1 million, according to the Engineering Development Board (EDB).

EDB Chief Executive Officer Hamad Ali Mansoor announced that the locally developed EV could be launched by June or July, marking the first time a domestically manufactured electric car will roll off Pakistan’s production lines. The vehicle is being produced at a manufacturing plant established in Lahore.

Mansoor said the affordable price point aims to provide an entry-level car option for consumers, particularly those who currently rely on motorcycles for transportation. The move is expected to expand car ownership among middle- and lower-income households.

The upcoming EV is projected to offer a driving range of up to 180 kilometres on a single charge, making it suitable for daily commuting and urban travel.

Speaking at an iftar gathering hosted by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) Director Mashood Khan, the EDB chief also said the government plans to reduce taxes on locally assembled vehicles in the upcoming federal budget to make cars more affordable and support the domestic auto industry.

According to Mansoor, the upcoming auto policy will provide strong government support to local manufacturers and encourage further investment in electric vehicle production. He noted that two to three additional companies have already expressed interest in manufacturing EVs in Pakistan.

The government is also working on broader measures to promote electric mobility, including a Rs100 billion incentive programme aimed at boosting EV adoption and encouraging exports of “Made in Pakistan” vehicles to international markets.

Industry observers believe the launch of a sub-Rs1 million electric car could significantly reshape Pakistan’s auto market by making electric mobility accessible to a much larger segment of the population while reducing reliance on imported fuel.
