K-P Halts Crackdown on Illegal Afghan Migrants

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Police have temporarily suspended their ongoing operations and new arrests of Afghan nationals residing in the province without valid documentation, in response to the recent border closure and growing administrative complications.

According to police officials, the decision was taken on the special directives of the Inspector General of Police, who cited the current uncertainty and humanitarian concerns arising from the closure of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. All regional and district police officers were instructed to refrain from making new arrests of Afghan nationals until further notice, although cases of migrants already in custody will continue to be processed under existing laws.

The temporary halt also comes amid reports of overcrowding at detention facilities, especially in the provincial capital Peshawar, where over 1,000 undocumented Afghan nationals were recently taken into custody during earlier phases of the crackdown. Police clarified that this suspension is an administrative measure and not a permanent policy shift. During this period, authorities plan to focus on data gathering — including document verification and compiling comprehensive records — to ensure better-organised implementation of future decisions.

Officials also emphasised that routine policing activities will persist across the province to maintain law and order, tackle crime, and protect sensitive locations, while the pause on migrant arrests remains in effect. The move reflects growing concerns about the humanitarian impact of mass detentions and deportations during an already volatile regional climate.
