Querétaro, Mexico — The Mexican national team is set to host Iceland in an international friendly match in Querétaro this week, proceeding as scheduled despite a widespread security alert that has gripped multiple states following the death of a top cartel leader.

The match, intended as a preparation fixture for both squads, will take place at the Estadio La Corregidora. However, the region remains on high alert after the Mexican military confirmed the death of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in Talpa de Allende, Jalisco, on Sunday.

The operation triggered immediate retaliation from criminal cells, including roadblocks, vehicle burnings, and gunfights across at least six states. In response, the state of Querétaro activated a security “shield” along its borders with Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, and Michoacán, establishing observation points and patrols to prevent violence from spilling over.

The security situation prompted the U.S. Embassy to issue an urgent alert, advising citizens in several states—including Querétaro—to “shelter in place” due to road blockages and criminal activity. The alert noted that operations on toll roads in Querétaro and other states were temporarily curtailed due to blockades.

This wave of violence has already impacted sports events in the state. The Liga MX match between FC Juárez and Querétaro, originally scheduled for Sunday at the same La Corregidora stadium, was officially postponed. As of Monday, local authorities have not announced any changes to the Mexico vs. Iceland fixture, but security is expected to be extremely tight.
