Gul Plaza Gas Generator Not Linked to K-Electric, Clarifies MQM-P
KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has moved to clarify the operational status of the gas generator at Gul Plaza, the site of a devastating fire in January, stating that the unit has no connection to the city’s power utility, K-Electric.
The clarification comes in response to what the party describes as a “misrepresentation” of recent remarks made by senior leader Dr. Farooq Sattar regarding the incident. In an official statement, the party’s spokesperson emphasized that Dr. Sattar had explicitly stated that the gas-powered generator installed at Gul Plaza was completely independent of K-Electric in terms of its installation, operations, and management .

According to MQM-P, the generator was licensed by the Sindh Energy Department, with the legal responsibility for monthly safety inspections falling to the Electrical Inspector under the Government of Sindh . The party alleged that these mandatory inspections were neglected for several years, a failure they claim “apparently led to the unfortunate fire incident” .
The generator’s role in the tragedy has been a point of contention as investigations continue. MQM-P stressed that presenting accurate facts to the public is crucial to preventing “misleading impressions” . Dr. Farooq Sattar has reiterated his demand for a judicial commission to probe the negligence surrounding the incident and hold those accountable .
